Rural Movie Nights

Movie Night in the Bergen Community Hall January 2006

Bringing Youth together in rural communities

Rural Community Movie nights began back in June of 2004 at the Westward-Ho Community Hall. The movie shown was Miracle, and the theme of the evening was community and team building. Youth and their families came together to watch the movie and listen to special guest speaker Karen Grudeski, a Sundre High School Wellness Worker. Although only a small crowd attended, this night would be the beginning of many successful movie nights.

Our smaller rural communities have made a tremendous effort to support this socially aware yet entertaining event.

In October we visited the Bearberry community and showed the movie The Day After Tomorrow. Guest speaker David Wells shared his humourous adventures of working in the movie industry. With the theme of the movie 'Global Warming gloom and doom', David also took the time to compare the reality of the movie to more scientific evidence of global warming. He explained what role we all play in keeping our world clean and safe. The event attracted around 70 community members, who enjoyed a great movie and an inspiring guest speaker.

Again in November, we 'packed up' movie night and visited the rural Bergen area. We brought with us Around The Workd in 80 Days and special guest speaker Becky Loewen. More than eighty people attended and displayed a sincere desire to of come together in support of local community events. Becky shared with us her gentle love of humanity and wrapped it up with a moving slide show that gave us a wonderful glimpse of her travels outside Canada.

The goal of these movie nights is to bring youth together for an entertaining, yet inspiring and safe, evening.

If you have an interest in connecting with youth and would like to share your expertise, please contact Jackie at Greenwood Neighbourhood Place.

Thanks for the support, Sundre!
