A new Chicklets Program for 2007 is coming very soon. Keep on watching. Dates will be announced shortly.
During the month of November a program called Chicklets ran in our community. Chicklets is a preventative program for young teen girls.
The program was developed in Sturgeon and has run successfully in different communities since.
Chicklets takes a look at young teen girls and the issues they face on an everyday basis. The issues may be safety, nutrition, self image, relationships and even the importance of having fun in a stress filled world.
The community came together with great effort to support these girls and there learning experience.
The sessions were broke down into once a week, two hour workshops.
The first gathering covered was ‘Relationships’, how they affect our lives, and keeping them positive. Cindy Shyback worked the girls through the dynamics of building a healthy relationship.
The Next week was talking about Nutrition and how important it is to growing bodies. Kathryn Syposh from DTHR worked with girls on good food choices, showing how healthy snacks can be fun by making smoothies with them.
The next week got down to serious issues of keeping ourselves safe in the community. R.C.M.P. guest speaker Constable Millard gave a very informative talk about being home alone, after school safety and what not to do on the internet. Issues of drug and alcohol abuse were discussed and safety in the vehicle was also covered.
The week of the 22nd was back to fun with Cindy Robinson from next Time Round and Jessica from Hair Hacienda. The girls were able to go through the motions of skin and hair care, then play around with skin and hair products.
Our last meeting was spent hip hopping with Janet Marr. What a great way to end a program in celebration. After dancing the afternoon away the girls were awarded certificates of participation and received very extravagant gifts donated with great kindness from Pharmasave. Great Community Spirit, Great Community Teens, way to go SUNDRE!!

Historie of the Program
STURGEON YOUTH COUNCIL
The young women of Sturgeon Youth Council saw a need to host a conference that related directly with issues for young women.
These sessions of the creation of Chicks in Charge is meant to:
- address the issues of young women in our area
- provides them with current information
- link them to community programs
- build self esteem and confidence in our young women
- acceptance and understanding of ourselves
- development of youth leader in our community
- ability to address issues in a positive, productive way
- ability to have the knowledge to grow into confident strong women.
The first Chicklets session in Sundre took place on April 29, 2005.
It was very successful with 30 registrations. One of our facilitators was a nutritionist from Olds. She shared a healthy recipe with the girls. They all got to make there own lunch.
We have been asked to run an ongoing program. If parents show an interest we may well do that. Please contact Jackie @638-1011.
