Our Philosophy
Our children and you are resources for the future development, progress and evolution of our communities.
The Nutrition for Learning Program was one of the six national recipients of the Alberta Milk Nutrition Award, announced in May 2006. Please click here for some pictures of the event.
Did you know...
-
that two out of every five children attend school without adequate nutrition
-
that researchers and educators believe breakfast is both important and necessary for the learning ability of children.
This leads to irritability, inability to properly concentrate in the classroom, inactivity or hyperactivity in the classroom and discipline problems in school.
-
that teachers have reported that children are calmer and less agitated after a snack
-
that eating together creates a safe, caring and friendly environment
-
that children who learn about nutrition and food groups, continue with good nutritional habits at home.
Our Solution...
-
A group of concerned community members, staff and parents of students at River Valley School have come together to address this need.
It started with the idea of providing a nutritious snack during the school day.
-
Sundre and District Nutrition for Learning Society goes into the school with a nutritious snack and beverage for every student at
River Valley School from ECS to grade 8. This snack program addresses the nutritional needs of children, gives them a head start in their
learning, encourages social interaction and offers service to the community.
-
The response has been overwhelming for us. Teachers inform us that 82% of participating children reported less irritability, 41% decrease in discipline problem and 73% of children experience increased attention span.
-
The introduction of a nutritious snack and education about proper nutrition, has had an impact on entire families as the children continue to apply what they have learned at home
We would like to do more...
If changes to our school atmosphere are so evident with one snack every two weeks... what would happen if we expanded the program to everyday?
This is something that we endeavour to accomplish but we cannot do this on our own.
We need volunteers to prepare and distribute the snacks. We also need sponsorship for the financial resources to undertake such a task.
If you have some spare time or some available resources, we would appreciate your time and your involvement in this worthwile project.
Together, we can all change the face of our community, one child at a time.
You have an opportunity to really impact the social development and behaviour attitudes of the children in your school district.
