IN THE PAST
The Olds Food Bank started in 1987, when Mrs. Grace de Jong, a local community volunteer, recognized through her association with
various organizations, that food was being wasted during a time when people were going hungry. She, in conjunction with the town administration,
established the Olds Food Bank.
In time, clients came from other towns and surrounding areas in the County of Mountain View and in 1993 application was made to have the
OLDS & DISTRICT FOOD BANK SOCIETY incoporated as a charitable organization.
STATISTICS FOR SUNDRE
In 2002 the Mountain View Food Bank handed out 208 hampers to families in Sundre including 373
children. This number has increased 11% to the number of hampers going out to Sundre in 2001.
For the month of January, February and March of 2003 the total number of hampers going out to
families in Sundre was 92, including 107 children. This number has increased 74 % compared to
the number of hampers in Jan/Feb/March of 2002.
An individual or family is able to access the Food Bank up to 6 times a year with a hamper
worth about $ 100 to $ 150 depending on family members. One hamper supplies food to last 5 to 7 days. The Food Bank use the Canadian Food Guide and tailor the hamper to fit the family.
Transportation to the Food Bank is still a problem for some families in Sundre.
If this is an issue, let us know and we can help you with a volunteer driver. Prior arrangements have to be made if you are in need of this service.
Our office has connected numerous people with the Food Bank in Sundre.
FOOD BANK DONATIONS
According to Harvey Shevalier, any fresh food donations are welcome at any time.
The Food Bank has a large storage room and cooler to store food. The only item that is very
hard to maintain is fresh lettuce, since these are so plentiful when in season and have a very
short shelf life.
A collection box is located at the Sundre IGA.
Any donations will be accepted here at Greenwood Neighbourhood Place, Monday to Thursday from 9 am to 4:30 pm and Fridays from 10 am to 3 pm. .
Monetary donations are always welcome and tax deductible. If you would rather donate food we can always use:
