Child Care Funding Program (Pilot)
What is the Kin Child Care Program?
The Kin Child Care Funding Program is intended to provide eligible low-income families who reside in Central Alberta with the ability to choose and pay relatives as an option to meet their child care needs. This pilot program is operated by the Central Alberta Child & Family services Authority (CFSA).
Who can apply?
Single or two parent families can apply for funding if they:
- Need more than fifty hours of child care per child each month
- Have a child(ren) who is not yet enrolled in grade one and has not yet reached their seventh birthday
- Have an adult relative of the child who is willing and able to provide care
- Are employed (or self-employed), attending school or a training program
- Or their child has a medical, physical, psychological, or other special need that requires the child to be in the care of another person
Kin Child Care Funding Amount
Eligibility for funding is determined through an assessment of:
- Gross family income
- Family size
Maximum funding rate is $ 240 per child per month.
Families are encouraged to call the Central Alberta CFSA office listed below for a funding estimate.
How do parents apply?
Application packages are available at any local Region 4 Central Alberta CFSA Office location. Parents can then submit a completed application form, caregiver information form, along with supporting documentation to the Regional CFSA Office in their area. A caseworker will review the application and determine if they are eligible for funding. They will receive a letter notifying them of their eligibility for funding and how to secure ongoing payments.
How is funding paid?
If a family qualifies and provides receipts from the relative caregivers proving their expenses, funding will be paid directly to them on a monthly basis.
Appeals
Applicants may appeal a decision regarding eligibility within 30 days through their Kin Child Care Worker, Supervisor/Regional ECD Program Specialist and Regional Manager. The Regional CFSA Office will provide appeal forms.
Accountability
Applicants are expected to provide all required documentation to confirm eligibility as well as report any changes in circumstances that might impact their supports. If there is a change in their circumstances, they must contact the Regional CFSA office immediately. Failing to report a change in their situation could mean a family would have to repay funding amounts received.
